Traditionally, in North America, kitchen cabinets have been built using a “framed” system. What this means is that there’s usually a 1” to 2” face frame in between door openings. The cabinet doors and fronts are attached to the face surface using hinges.

So essentially, once your cabinet doors are and drawer fronts are installed, you’ll still be able to see the hinges, as well as a bit of the cabinet frame in between the openings. 

Although some homeowners don’t like the fact that you can still see the hardware, this gives a framed cabinet system more of a vintage look. Furthermore, a framed system is sometimes also more versatile, simply because you can use a wider variety of drawers and doors frames in your kitchen, easily swapping them out as desired. 

On the other hand, a frameless cabinet system does not have any exposed face surfaces. 

The only parts of the frame you’ll be able to see is if you have exposed end pieces at either end of your cabinet. All doors and drawers are mounted with “hidden hinges” or hardware to the sidewalls inside the cabinet frame.. 

This type of frameless cabinet system is sometimes also referred to as European or contemporary style.

As mentioned above, previously, framed cabinets were the most popular option in North America. But in 2012, when IKEA expanded in the U.S. and Canada, they brought with them and popularized this European-style of kitchen cabinets.

IKEA cabinets are made primarily with a 3/4″ particleboard core, covered by a melamine foil with plastic edging. This gives them a finish that can be as durable as real wood, although at a significantly reduced price.

So if you do decide to order custom cabinets from a private manufacturer, ensure that you ask about the materials they use before making your final decision to buy from them.
